From the John Coffee Hays, Applewhite-Clark Collection. Swante Magnus Swenson (February 24, 1816 – June 13, 1896) a good friend of John C. Hays, Swenson was the 1PstP Swedish immigrant to Texas (1838). He learned business skills initially by peddling goods from the back of a carriage. Invested in land and paid for other Swedish immigrants to come to Texas in exchange for 1 year of their labor on his plantations. He invested in railroad stock and continued to buy land, becoming one of the largest land holders in Texas and founding the SMS Ranch in West Texas.
