From the John Coffee Hays, Applewhite-Clark Collection. Circa 1847-1848, General Joe Lane in Mexican War Uniform. He was Colonel Hays Commanding Officer , during the later part of the Mexican War of 1846-48. Also a personal friend and associate. General Lane entered the Mexican War as Colonel of the 2nd Regiment of Indiana Volunteers. He was Brevetted Brigadier General and later as a Major General for action at Huamantla, Mexico, in the chase for Santa Anna at the end of the war. Also at this battle, Captain Samuel H. Walker, also under Gen. Lane's command, was killed. After the war, during the 1850's General Lane resided to California, eventually died in Oregon in 1881. Measures 1.75" x 2.75"
