Daguerreotype photograph of legendary Texas Ranger RIP Ford with General Joe Lane. John Salmon Ford was a doctor, lawyer, journalist, Confederate Colonel, Mayor of Brownsville, eventually a Texas Senator, and a renowned Texas Ranger. He got his nickname, "Rip" Ford, during the Mexican-American War in 1846, when he was assigned the duty of writing condolence letters to deceased soldier's families, he would add “Rest in Peace” next to the name, which eventually became shortened to “R.I.P.” He was soon known across the Lone Star State as “Rip” Ford.
