A leading figure in the Texas Republic, Samuel Augustus Maverick (July 23, 1803 – September 2, 1870) Daguerreotype of Mary Ann and Sam Augustus Maverick, family friends of the Hays’ in Texas. Sam graduated from Yale University in 1825 and started handling some of his father’s businesses. He then studied law and developed a keen business sense. Later, he moved to Texas from Alabama in 1835, served as a delegate to the Texas Independence Convention, became seriously ill and had to return to Alabama. In 1837 he returned to San Antonio, practiced law, speculated on land, was captured by Mexican General Woll and held at Perote Castle until 1843. Over the years, Maverick continued to increase his holdings in stock and land. He amassed over 300,000 acres of land during his lifetime in Texas. Maverick County, Texas is named in his honor (1/6 plate). 2.75" x 3.25"
