From the John Coffee Hays, Applewhite-Clark Collection. Henry Durant (June 18, 1802 in Acton, Massachusetts – January 22, 1875 in Oakland, California) was an American minister and educator. Ambrotype of Henry Durant credited with the founding of the University of California and served as its first President. John C. Hays and his partners sold and donated much of the land for the University. Durant also served as Mayor of Oakland. The images are in a “book” case, marked “AMBROTYPE by BOWMAN” and “Cutting's Pat July 4 & 11 1854”. 3.25" x 4.25"
